Buy your car second-hand without fear of being scammed

Pancho is your virtual assistant for buying used cars. He will review the car with you step by step so you don't get fooled.

Why you should inspect a car before buying it

One in three used cars in Europe has had its mileage tampered with. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

When you don't know about cars, you don't know what to look for. Some things seem like minor details but end up costing hundreds or thousands of euros to fix. And some are essential for the car to be safe.

That car that looks like a bargain might not be one after all.

Pancho is like going to see the car with a friend who knows about mechanics. You show him photos, answer a few simple questions and in 15 minutes he tells you if what you see is what they're selling you. All from your phone, no appointment needed.

Frequently asked questions about inspecting a used car

Before buying a used car, check seven visible areas: vehicle history via the DMV title record (accidents, liens, title brands, previous owners); cold-start behavior and exhaust smoke; bodywork (resprays, uneven panel gaps, underbody rust); matching tires with a DOT date code under 6 years old; an interior whose wear matches the mileage (steering wheel, pedals, driver's seat); warning lights on the dash; and up-to-date paperwork. AskPancho guides you through these points with specific photos in 15 minutes. For internal mechanical checks, a workshop inspection is still recommended.
The most reliable way is to cross-check the odometer against the mileage recorded in official records and the car's physical wear. Pull the vehicle history via your state DMV title record: every inspection, emissions test and title transfer should show higher mileage each time, never lower. Then compare with a polished steering wheel, worn rubber pedals, a sagging driver's seat or a heavily worn shifter: if the wear doesn't match the claimed miles, the real number is higher. The European Parliament estimates that 30-50% of used cars in the EU have manipulated mileage, and the problem is well documented in the US market too.
Always ask for: a clean title in the seller's name (watch out for salvage, rebuilt or flood brands), current state registration, the DMV title history (prior owners and reported mileage at each transfer), a service history with shop stamps and receipts for major work (timing belt, transmission, head gasket), a current smog/emissions certificate where your state requires one, and two sets of keys. If anything important is missing or the seller won't show it, treat it as a red flag.
During the visit, be wary if you notice: different paint gloss or color when you open the doors and hood; uneven panel gaps; bolts with marks showing they've been loosened; visible welds or filler in the engine bay or underbody; dashboard warning lights that switch off just as you arrive (codes may have been cleared); pressure to close the deal the same day; or refusal to let an independent mechanic inspect the car. Always view the car in daylight, in an open space and with a cold engine.
Ask directly: are you the titled owner, and how many owners has it had?, has it ever been in an accident or had an insurance claim?, when were the timing belt, transmission service and last inspection done?, can you show me the full title history and service records?, why are you selling?, can I take it for a test drive and have it checked at an independent shop?, are both key sets included? The answers, and the way they're given, tell you as much as the car itself.
AskPancho analyzes your photos and answers to detect visible signs of wear, prior damage, inconsistencies between claimed mileage and real use, and paperwork red flags. It doesn't replace diagnostics that need tools or a lift: it can't measure the internal health of the engine or transmission, deeply read the ECU, verify emissions, see welds hidden under fresh paint, or evaluate how the car drives. The report is orientative and doesn't replace a professional workshop inspection or a state safety/emissions inspection. Think of AskPancho as a first expert opinion to help you decide whether the car is worth a deeper look.
